Left or right? Which do you prefer
Jun. 25th, 2009 12:25 pmAn interesting debate that came up in the office, but if filling in a webform which has an okay and a cancel action, would you expect to find the okay button first and on the left, or second and on the right?
Now oddly, if it was a << Back | Forward >> combination, I'd always expect the positive on the right hand side, but if it was OK or Cancel, I'd instinctively go for the one on the left first. The other guys in the office would still expect it to be on the right.
The main reason we concluded is quite possibly OS related. Mac OS (which everyone else uses here) default dialog boxes always have okay as the furthest button on the right, whereas Windows (which I'm using) has it on the left (think there's a software patent to blame in there somewhere), so if you've used a particular OS for a while you probably get used to the buttons on everything being a certain way round.
What does everyone else think though? Would you go left or right when filling in a webpage form (and what OS do you use too, in case it has a bearing?)?
