Gah, I'm about as bored as I can get now. It might not be so bad if there was actually someone online, but it seems there's just me about at the moment. Annoyingly there are loads of big things I should be writing, but I can't be faffed to write.

In an attempt to relieve the boredom over the last few days, I have been buying fairly pointless stuff online. Of course I can't really afford it, but what else is a student supposed to do? I got a load of the Dutch Watership Down DVDs from bol.com. The gits did mess me around for nearly a week though, before *finally* shipping the order on Friday minus one of the DVDs, which I'm guessing they can't source. I doubt I'll bother shopping there again. =:\

The other thing I bought was a new case (with PSU) for the old computer that I never actually use. =:P Ebuyer have topped their record delivery from last time. I only ordered it on Sunday afternoon, with the standard delivery. It should have arrived Thursday... well, today is Tuesday in case you didn't know. I just wish they could start packaging their stuff properly. Anyway, the idea behind getting this was that it could be the start of upgrading the old machine to something halfway decent. The old case would only take a Micro-ATX board, and I don't think its wimpy 150W supply could really have coped with anything remotely fast these days, hence the new 300W case (Oh, won't my father love moaning about the cost of electric on this). Although it's just a cheap and nasty one (ie £11-ish), I fitted all the old stuff to it today, and it's run perfectly for a good few hours (you may recall me mentioning the computer would barely last an hour at the weekend, before resetting). Claws crossed it wasn't just a fluke. =:) It suggests the problem was just the old PSU rather than the motherboard. Whether it was just too weak, or whether it was starting to fail, I haven't a clue, and frankly I don't care. =:P The only minor disadvantage is that if this thing is running stable again, it gives me a good excuse to drag out the already decrepit Socket 7 board for another 5 years or so. =:P

Hmm... I guess this means I can add a case and old PSU to that Cyrix 233Mhz processor in my collection of things to destroy just as soon as someone can suggest an insane and inventive enough way to do so. I'm open to suggestions on that one; the more dangerous (especially to others) the better. =:D

Don't ask me, I have kept every little screw from all the computers I've owned. =:D

Just out of interest, has it turned up yet? If not, you could always go to

Sounds like a good idea - just a word of warning; it's not a good idea to order too many DVDs at once (say, the whole four) as the packaging for large orders is a bit...insecure. =:-P But batches of two work, in my experience, very Frithing well. =;-)

I feel a reasonable balance between potential effectiveness and lack of mortal danger might be achieved by the use of some jumper cables and a car battery, with some aluminium foil to better complete the "circuit" more reliably across more pins.

Alternatively, there's always the faithful microwave, but that might require some pre-planning, to investigate whether its mode of failure would be more along the lines of the relinquishment of its magic smoke, or a sudden, violent disagreement within its ceramic casing as to which direction to head in next.
