It seems all week I've had to put up with everyone happily posting about the fantastic thunderstorms they've had, whilst here in this dump of the North East there's been...um... nothing. =:( Well yesterday things finally changed. There was some thunder in the early hours of yesterday morning. Okay, it was only a few weak rumbles, and there was no sign of the accompanying lightning, but it's better than nothing. I love thunderstorms and just wish we'd get more of them here. *sighs* Is there anyone kind enough to send a few this way?

Well, judging by the latest CAPE runs (visible here), there seems to be a small chance for later on today, though personally I'd bet quite heavily against anything interesting coming out of that one. Late on Monday and into Tuesday would seem a better bet, especially since (according to the BBC, anyway) eastern England and southern Scotland are most likely to get the "rain, heavy and possibly thundery" that's forecast. The Met Office have also issued an Advance Severe Weather Warning for Monday and Tuesday, and Will Hand (an ex-Met Office person who contributes to uk.sci.weather thinks there's about a 25% chance of "extremely violent" thunderstorms during that period.

The CAPE runs also seem to show a fair bit of thunderstorm potential around Thursday, but forecasting that far out is fraught with risks, so it's probably not worth getting excited about that one just yet - and it also seems more concentrated in central England. Incidentally, you can always check the CAPE runs for the coming week on http://www.metcheck.com - click on the small image labelled "Thunderstorm Potential" on the right of Metcheck's front page.

Tbh, your real problem up there is being in the shelter of the Pennines. Given our prevailing westerly winds in this country, that makes it quite a bit less likely that any given thunderstorm will still have much, if any, power left in it by the time it reaches you in County Durham. If you do get something out of the Monday/Tuesday event, then make the most of it. Good luck! =:)

Actually, the Met Office warnings page now rates the North East as having a 50% chance of severe weather conditions (equal highest in the country) during the first half as next week, and has this to say:

During Monday and Tuesday the rain is expected to become increasingly thundery with some violent thunderstorms and very heavy downpours as it progresses eastwards across the country, while drier but showery weather follows from the west. Some prolonged periods of heavy rain are likely in eastern Scotland and northeast England during Tuesday and Wednesday.

And as for what's approaching, it's the remnants of Tropical Storm Alex, and there's a rather dramatic picture of it here.

Well, if it's any consolation, so have I, 'cos there haven't been any thunderstorms here at all. =:-c There were thunderstorms just a few miles away, but all we got was rain. =:-P
So, if anyone's got any spare thunderstorms after sending you some, perhaps they can send some over here as well...? Pleeeeeeease! =:-D

*bites his lip and inspects your singed tail before sitting you down and carefully looking after it* that was pretty good... but I thinks you're gonna have to work on the cuteness just a little bit more...
and don't swish tails under these circumstances... it creates a target

Surely! I've put one in the mail for you. Transatlantic postal service is a little sketchy for oddly-shaped objects like that, but I can guarantee you it'll get there sometime between now and the end of October. Happy birthday! =:)
