Nov. 5th, 2004 06:07 pmVery interesting! The one who loves politics and normally gives us a running commentary on any regional/national elections (you know who you are =;)), hasn't mentioned a single word about the results of the vote in the North East for the new regional assembly. I guess I will then. It always seems as though the only ones hugely in favour of this were the government (pre-general-election sweetening anyone?), and it seems the public have proven this (me not included, as I'm not on the electoral roll in the NE now). Over 3 quarters voted against it, and chose to keep the present system in the north. The local council did appear to be against this themselves, or at least it sounded as such in their signs and stuff (ie - If you vote yes, it will cost you more money, split up the North East community, and give you very little new say in things), and have been dolling up the area in the last few weeks (Durham hasn't had new bins in years, or that digital display outside County Hall...um... ever). I bet some people there are celebrating tonight, though John Prescott wasn't when they had him speaking earlier. =:P How this will impact the votes to be held in the North West and Yorkshire for assemblies remains to be seen I guess.

Date: 2004-11-05 04:23 pm (UTC)*Grins* Actually, I did mean to mention something about it, but didn't for the simple reason that I had (*cough*) completely forgotten the vote was this week. Which may tell you something about how much coverage the whole thing has had down here. =:P
There was little chance of one of these assemblies in the West Midlands even if the NE had voted Yes, and I think the whole idea is pretty much dead in the water now. From what I've read, I'd have voted No myself, since I don't think the thing's purpose was explained or justified sufficiently - I haven't seen a convincing answer to the question, "What is this assembly for?"
