Environmental thought...

With more and more utility companies and banks claiming they like to help the environment (ie their profit) by using 'paperless billing', when are all those firms who continue to insist that you need a 'utility bill' or 'bank statement' to prove you exist at an address going to catch on... funnily enough the same banks insisting on offering 'paperless billing' being one such group.

I think the idea is to get the new biometric ID cards to replace this as a means of address verification.

I'd like to think so, but given how slow companies usually are to catch onto these changes (there are still some that insist everyone must have a BT landline in this day and age too), I'll not hold my breath of it happening anytime in the next 10 years. =:P

That actually caught out the coworker this summer, when trying to rent a car to bring the stuff over from the old warren - he takes care of most of his bills online, so doesn't get anything paper for those. (Although my flist today did note the case of one fur getting paper notification that his online statement was now ready =:)

Some companies are pretty shady about it too. I know on my Vodafone one, they don't mention as soon as you sign up for an online account they'll cancel your paper billing automatically until *after* signing up. Which wouldn't be an issue if their online billing didn't spend half its time telling you the pages are unavailable at the moment... =:P
