Awww, David Tennant just announced on the NTA that he's definitely leaving after the 2009 Doctor Who specials, though it wasn't entirely unsuspected I suppose... =:P

Unlike certain newspapers, it seems... I didn't see it, but apparently the Guardian's website had the news up a little bit in advance, then took it down hastily when someone realised. =:P

And on the Tennant issue specifically: I'm glad. I think he's been a good Doctor, but I also think it's time for a change, and that he'd have overstayed his welcome had he stayed much longer. We need someone else to do it now. Who, I have no idea!

I just wonder whether changing so many people all at once will have a negative impact, given it's going to be new Doctor, new assistant, new head writer, new executive producer, all at once. If they end up with a shoddy actor in his place, it'll cast a shadow over Moffat's new stories too for example. Whenever actors have left in the past, it's always tended to be staggered (Doctor series 1, Rose series 2 for example), so effects have been minimised. I guess time will tell though. =:P

For some reason I thought this had been common knowledge for months - and I'm not even one to pay attention to this sort of thing. Presumably it'd been decided ages ago and they decided to announce it now for some reason, maybe to distract people from that other thing they seem to think is newsworthy.

I think it's been unofficial knowledge for a while, as if he was planning to stay they'd have already announced it by now. As for announcing it now though, I suspect that'll be more to do with the fact they want to rekindle interest in the show ahead of the christmas preview going out in the next few weeks, and an awards ceremony seems as good an excuse as any. =:P
