US Con Ponderings
Jun. 15th, 2011 08:18 amOne of the big cons I still have pencilled in for later this year is MFF2011 in November. As folks know I've been saying for years I want to get to at least one US con before I inevitably become too tired and weary of furries (as everyone seems to), so the plan was for this to be it. I already have the membership sorted (not that I've ever received any confirmation from them mind so not sure if that's normal, but I have my Paypal receipt anyway), and a proper twin room booked.
However I am starting to consider cancelling the whole thing now, as at least then I'm only wasting the con fee and nothing else. This whole thing is no cheap endeavour so I need to get value from it. It's about £500-600 for flights over there, then about another 300 for the room factoring in conversion. I had intended to compensate for this somewhat by sharing with someone, and by doing some other things whilst over there. It is looking increasingly likely it will just be me on my own though as a lot of folks who were going have dropped out and no one else has responded to my mentions of 'LFG'. Additionally I honestly can't think of anyone in the US I know. Most of the American furs I used to know through Furrymuck, but as most people have ditched the place in recent years I've generally lost contact with all of them. Thus I'd probably be left doing what I do at meets and just drifting around saying hellos to the very small number of the UK lot still going and not in private room parties, before pretty much flying straight back, and part of me is wondering whether it's really worth flying all the way to Chicago for that. :P
I suspect I'll leave a final decision until after Eurofurence in August, but at the moment the reasons in favour of it aren't compelling.
