Hmm... I knew I wasn't exactly in practice when it comes to cooking things, but it wasn't until I just looked at a recipe sheet that I realised just how bad I am! I mean, when something says '1 cup chopped onion', the first thing I think of is 'What the hell size is the cup?'. =:o Oh, and what in Frith's name is Marsala wine? Gah, where's that Red Panda when you need him? =;)

(edit: And sorry for the delay in replies to comments. There's a bug somewhere in Mozilla Mail which causes it to randomly stop actually syncing email when I tell it to sync email, without me even realising. I only got my notifications hours later! =:\)

Well, what sizre is a 'cup'? It's an absurd measurement, especially in US-land where one is expected somehow to measure a cup of butter.

URGH!!! I hate measuring a cup of butter... I used to have to do it all the time in Food class, it is messy and gross and inefficient and URGH!!!

I suppose that all depends on a number of variables - "how big is the onion?", for example... And more importantly - how much onion can you take, anyway?! =:-P It's funny how these humble vegetables keep popping up, though...must be part of some secret plan... =;-)>

Roughly speaking (and after all, unless it's something like a cake, where the actual ratios really do determine the end result, the quantities are usually just a matter of taste anyway), I'd call a cup something like a British teacup, or around half to two-thirds of a mug. But then, I virtually never follow recipes' quantities, just their flavor suggestions and rough quantities. ^_^ Much more fun to just make it up as one goes along, as when I first tried making pad thai, also the first time I'd cooked with lemongrass. Mmm, lemongrass..

Good call on sherry! Maybe I'd add a dash of port, too, but sweet sherry should give the desired effect nicely.

And now we're all wondering: how did it turn out? ^_^
